Last night was so busy, I'm not sure if I got anything accomplished! Between 18 students there is a limited amount of teacher and tool time - there are four torches, one drill, 4 polishing machines, etc. and I found myself working on little bits and pieces while waiting for the drill. The bookstore was also closed, but as luck would have it, I found just enough brass and copper wire on the classroom floor for rivets :-) I made my first rivet and carefully taped up the corner. Man, I hope it holds!
Soldering looks very tricky and Shona mentioned it takes 6-7 years to learn to solder very well. I'm not sure if I have the manual dexterity required for a lot of the fine itty bitty things jewellery incorporates, but maybe after six or seven years I will. The solder has to be cut into itty bitty pieces, heated and picked up with a soldering pick. We need to solder a tube and a piece of wire onto another piece of metal for the sample. I used the polishing machine for the first time and I loved the results. The trick is to stand really close to it and not be afraid of the buffing wheel :-)
I should have something to show for my project soon. I have to hammer it a little more, saw it a little more, drill it a little more and then polish it a lot :-)
