All initial customer emails have been sent--and I'll follow up when I'm close to drawing each customer's pet.

Check for updates on Facebook and your spam folder--don't worry, I persistently follow up :-)

Also, be aware of a potential Canada Post strike starting around May 22--if that's the case, I'll be in touch about pick-up/drop-off options.

Thank you everyone for an excellent expo! I missed all y'all in 2024 and rebooked for 2026.

It was so awesome seeing old friends and faces and meeting new ones. It warmed my heart to hear how much the pet sketches mean to past customers and that you were looking for me last year, aw!

I'm unpacking and organizing today, but stay tuned for the remaining $10 sketches.

This year's response was amazing! Next year, I will only do $5 sketches at the table to keep things moving throughout the show.

If you placed an order, I'll be in touch soon!

The best place to see all the commissions is my Facebook page or Instagram.

I missed last year's comic expo due to health problems, but I'm back in the Artist Alley! My only hope is that I can still draw like the wind :-)

Come see me at table A476.

I'm still fulfilling orders from the comic expo, so I'm behind on most of my socials. You can stay tuned on my Facebook page or Instagram though!

Hi friends, I'm behind on all my socials because I'm trying to complete a pet portrait a day. I hope you're all doing well. I have 16 orders left to go, whew!

Like the return of longer days and birds, culture nerds wait all year for the Calgary Comic & Entertainment Expo! It's Calgary's little convention that could, growing into a massive event. I'm thrilled to announce I'll be there again for the first time since 2019.

I'll be doing pet sketches in the Big Four Building, table A5105. Come by and say hi!

I decided to bow out of the comic expo this summer. A lot of my artist alley peeps also decided to do the same thing. It's hard to predict when Alberta and British Columbia will be getting COVID vaccines for the general population and July feels unlikely.

Fortunately, there wasn't a penalty to move my table to 2022, so I wasn't out my $346. This surprised me--but it's nice that the convention realizes the extenuating circumstances. It was easier to move it than prepare and fret and plan and then have to cancel. The Big Four Building gets plenty hot, crowded and stuffy even in normal times. I have no idea if the Stampede is going to happen in a modified format either. I'm not a huge Stampede or rodeo fan, but the carnival atmosphere was fun.

I'm waiting to see if another convention that I rolled my table over last year will be going ahead this year. I think most spring and summer conventions will have it figured out by April :\

A familiar rite of spring for me and a lot of other local artists is the Calgary Comic & Entertainment Expo. I was somewhat relieved that the con was postponed. I just did not have the energy to prep for it. It is now moved from April to July and will be one day shorter. That means I get a little cash back, yay!

Now I just have to hope that it doesn't conflict with another June convention that I booked in Edmonton. The city where I live, Calgary, has cancelled all event permits until June 30th. I'm not sure if we'll even be travelling in June. Ah well...one day at a time!

LOL, at comic shows I don't mind drawing any animal that people want. I actually drew two unicorns at the Red & White Comic Card and Toy Show. My young customer was quite pleased with how her unicorn turned out. I enjoy talking to the young folk about drawing and always ask them to make sure that I'm getting their idea right. Remember when you see a child at a craft or comic show, they might be a customer too. Please don't push them aside, interrupt or talk over them :-)

I had a fun time at the Red & White Comic Card and Toy Show, but the lighting was quite dreadful. It was a pleasure to finish these pictures of Smalls and Wilson in the days following. Most people want to get their picture right away - but a little patience means a high quality scan and a coat of fixative spray.

The picture was challenging because I had them together at first, but the picture did not want to be made. After the second try, where I wasn't happy with the faces, I drew them separately and then made another sketch of them together. Funny how art is like that! It's always a conversation between the artist and the canvas.

I had a blast tabling at the Calgary Comic & Entertainment Expo. I have blogged about the show before - there's something for everyone there, even Grandma! Each year the show gets bigger and bigger and this year there were a lot of changes. The one that impacted me the most was that the entire Artist Alley would be housed in the Big Four Building, far away from the main action at the BMO Centre. This turned out to be a great move, as the foot traffic was amazing. I'll write more about the show because I'm still kind of sore and tired from standing, sitting and lugging the show suitcase around, but here's a sample of some of the on-demand pet sketches that I did. They were so popular that I have to snail mail out the ones I couldn't finish. If you want to see more, check out my Instagram (calzephyr77).

Funny how the closer the comic expo gets, the more productive I also get! Here are three more - Bob, Ruby and Blaire.

Bob shows off a red snapper! #acnl #animalcrossing #animalcrossingnewleaf #cats #cartoon #fanart #calgaryartist #Calgaryexpo #drawings

Finished Ruby! Unfortunate tree placement gives her a broccoli wig :D #drawings #cartoons #calgaryartist #animalcrossing #animalcrossingnewleaf #acnl #purpleponyart

ACNL Blaire. Originally she was was Mint, but a green squirrel was a bit much! #squirrel #cartoons #drawings #Calgaryexpo #yycartist #acnl #animalcrossing #animalcrossingnewleaf

I have been in super biz mode for the Calgary Comic & Entertainment Expo. This is my last weekend to wrap up all the things! Last year my to-do lists had to-do lists, but I am much more organized this year. I just have to print some prints, package some art and make sure all the little things are taken care of. It's going to be a fun time, I can't wait. My friend and I are sharing a table.

Thanks to Mike Rieger for the nifty graphic!
