I'm struggling with a self-portrait and I don't know how to finish. It started out well enough with a sketch that I refined and remeasured to make sure my eyes weren't too far apart, but I did mismeasure the distance from nose to the bottom of my chin. I erased it, but lost some lovely shading in the process that I can't seem to redo.

All portraits, in essence, should be fairly easy. The human face is put together in divine proportions that don't change unless there the face was traumatized in birth or an accident. The distance between your eyes, for example, is always one eye-length, and your nose is the same length as your thumb.

I think it's just easier to draw other people, period. I don't consider myself too ugly, but a self-portrait invites all sorts of personal criticisms. Are my eyebrows really that fuzzy? And this Mediterranean nose of mine! The layer of fat under the chin. All these unconfident thoughts somehow translate to the paper, I think.

Maybe I'll try again...maybe I'll rope hubs into being a model. Now take your thumbs away from your noses and go back to reading LJ!
