14 days until the comic expo!

I missed last year's comic expo due to health problems, but I'm back in the Artist Alley! My only hope is that I can still draw like the wind :-)

Come see me at table A476.

Just a little ACEO...

Given world events, it's just a little hard to be creative and make art right now, but I recently discovered Sennelier pastels. They are the Rolls Royce of pastels. Super expensive--and they even SMELL expensive--they run along paper like butter. I've been testing them out on different paper to see which works best.

I've always found oil pastels frustrating because they never seemed to blend well. Clearly, oil pastels are one of those art supplies where you'll get better results with the pricey supplies.

This little landscape was also a test for my new LED light tent. I've always had trouble photographing pieces, especially in winter, and I found one on sale at a local store with free delivery. Why I didn't buy one of these sooner I have no idea! It came with four background shades and folds up for easy storage!

Pupper Pair

Just finished editing this picture despite sending the original off in the mail a couple of weeks ago. The textured paper was a challenge to work with--usually it's not like you see every bump!

My second accepted short story--Trapped on Tragodia

For some reason, I thought I had already shared that one of my short stories was published this year! It's called Trapped on Tragodia and it's an exciting tale of friendship, adventure and journey into the unknown!

Odie is just a regular space trucker until a forced landing changes everything. I don't know how much to reveal about the story without spoiling it, LOL! I spotted the submission call from < a href="https://www.perennial-press.com/">Perennial Press in fall 2021, which seems forever ago. The anthology would contain stories and poems about arthropods--kind of a unique subject, IMHO. Now, this is why you always hang onto rejected ideas, because there could be a day when they fit perfectly. The idea I had hanging around was from a horror anthology submission call. I enjoy mild horror and tried my hardest, but liking something and creating something are two different things. I cannot write a horror story to save my life. However, I have a strong belief in the power of friendship and just let my authentic voice speak.

Inspired by childhood memories of movies like Mysterious Island, I changed the setting to a wild place where giant insects rule. If you know me, you'd be seriously surprised I wrote a story that doesn't contain birds or horses, but I was up for the creative challenge. Arthropoda was edited by JW Stebner, who also edits Hexagon, a speculative fiction magazine.

It was a long wait until I had a physical copy in my hands, but it was such a great moment to open the box and see my ideas made real, especially the gorgeous cover by Stephanie Lane Gage of Martian Press. Order your copy today--you won't be disappointed.

Pet Sketches...Astrid

Still working away on pet portraits over here, including sharing them! Astrid is an over the rainbow bridge soft-furred rat who enjoyed chilling in her coconut. After chatting with Astrid's human, I decided a three-dimensional paper picture was the right choice.

1700+ Etsy Sales!

Next year will be 20 years of having my Etsy shop--where has the time gone? And how much the craft/handmade/online selling world has changed in 20 years!

I'm glad I stuck with it as it's too easy to quit before you find a product or idea that really sticks...and in my case, it's been digital downloads. Each 100 sale marker still gives me a thrill!

Happy 2024!

Happy New Year! I know I haven't posted much on my blog lately, but I still working on pet portraits from the comic expo. I was hoping to get them wrapped up by the end of the year, but as usual life got in the way. I had a tooth extracted at the beginning of December. Although the tooth wasn't causing me pain, it was causing other health problems and feel like I'm only getting back to my normal self now a month later.

Life is great when you're not walking around with a giant infection in your face. However I organized all my business files for 2024 and worked on my sales spreadsheet from 2023 yesterday. I'm really happy with how my little Etsy shop is still doing after all these years. Even with just one craft sale and comic expo under my belt, my online sales really helped me get past the $1,000 mark. It's not a lot, LOL, but at least it's consistent! I don't know what 2024 has a head for me business-wise as I need to get my health back in order first there won't be much in the way of art making if I can't make art.

Happy New Year to all of you out there and thanks for reading if you did. All the best in 2024 as well!

My One Christmas Craft Sale

Unfortunately this past year I've had some health challenges, as one does when they hit their 40s. I'm only appearing at one Christmas craft sale--however, I'm still faithfully updating CalgaryCraftSales.com, so you can find a sale near you!

My one sale is the Harvest Hills Alliance Church Craft Sale and Tea, November 24 and 25th.

Twitter Art Exhibit 2023

I've been wanting to enter the Twitter Art Exhibit for years now. It always passed me by, but I was on it for 2023! The physical exhibit and sale is followed by a virtual exhibit and sale and this year all proceeds go to UNYA, or Urban Native Youth Association in British Columbia.

Each 5x7" original piece of art is $37.50US and you can browse the remaining cards for sale on the Twitter Art Exhibit website.

I created a paper silhouette of a horse called "Keep Moving". If you're unfamiliar with my silhouettes, I draw on one side and cut away paper until the silhouette remains. It's harder than it looks :-D I think next year I'll do a traditional drawing or painting because I'm unsure a silhouette translates well into an online sale since it's a niche art form.

Do take a look and pick up some nice art for yourself or a friend! The sale ends July 24 and right now if you buy four cards, you can get one free!

Doh!

So much for hitting the April 8th deadline :-D Two things conspired against me--I didn't realize that 4:59AM April 8th in my timezone wasn't 4:59AM April 8th in the publisher's timezone. I also, foolishly, cut my fingertip open while slicing bread. My finger bled and bled and once I convinced my husband that a band-aid wasn't going to cut it, he drove out to the all-night pharmacy and bought gauze pads, paper tape and more. No, a band-aid wasn't going to cut it. I used my first aid skills on myself and dressed the wound quite nicely.

When the sting subsided and I returned to my computer to submit the story, the submission form had closed! I'm not sad, although I was a little astounded. I checked a time map and I missed the window by seven minutes. Seven measly minutes!

On the plus side, we're now stocked for the next flesh wound and I still have a polished story to send out in the world!

Comic Expo, Here I Come!

Like the return of longer days and birds, culture nerds wait all year for the Calgary Comic & Entertainment Expo! It's Calgary's little convention that could, growing into a massive event. I'm thrilled to announce I'll be there again for the first time since 2019.

I'll be doing pet sketches in the Big Four Building, table A5105. Come by and say hi!

2023's Writing Scorecard

Well, I fooled myself today because I thought a submission I was working towards closed today, but it turns out it's actually April 8th!

I stayed up too late last night editing my story and was up early to finish it when I double-checked the submission page. At least I have another week to procrastinate?

I hoped to hear by now about three submissions in the hopper--but no news so far. Two are still marked in-progress in their respective submission systems and one could take longer.

However, it's good to always have at least one thing out there for consideration and three is the most amount I've submitted at one time.

The story I'm currently working on was written in May 2012 when we went to California. Suddenly I found myself with lots of quiet time. My Kobo e-reader was loaded up with a lot of books and short story anthologies and just for fun, I wrote some stories around some of the things we did and saw in California. These stories are by no means great and they're a little embarrassing to read now, but they are definitely the fertilizer for future success. The base ideas are not bad, just the execution. Like any skill, you have to practice it badly before you can practice it well.

I plunked the story into Word, let Grammarly spot all the missing commas and hyphens, and started breaking it up into logical sections in Scrivener. However, there was very little in the way of logical sections besides a beginning, middle, and end. After trying my best to reformat the story, I realized it simply must be rewritten while borrowing the basic framework. From the original 1300 words there are now about 5000 and I'm aiming for 6000.

I'm glad the submission deadline wasn't today--I'm so tired of this story--my brain needs a break from it!

Twitter Art Exhibit

I haven't been up to much art-wise. It seems finishing my husband's sweater was so epic that I don't know what to start on next, although, there's no shortage of unfinished projects around here ;-D

One thing I have to get done for sure is my entry for the Twitter Art Exhibit. I've been meaning to enter this for years, but the deadline always eludes me. To be included in the print catalogue, the item must be received by March 25th, so I gotta boogie! Each entry is 5x7" and must be a few millimeters thick. I'm doing a paper silhouette.

Peaches the Cockatiel

This 8x10" portrait of Peaches the cockatiel is my belated half of an art trade with a friend who drew Muffin's portrait. You may recall a bunch of posts called "Peaches in Progress" where I tried making a digital composition of her bird. LOL although I'm old enough that I should be able to produce digital art, I'm just not very good at it and went back to what I know best--paper!

The peaches and leaves are from a rubber stamp set btw.

I made a sweater!

One of the problems with being a textile artist is that your art tips over into the craft category. I bought a flatbed knitting machine a couple of years ago and finally made a sweater on it. I was so committed to the sweater that I have been avoiding starting anything new. I thought it could be completed over Christmas break and maybe it could have if I didn't run out of yarn. This was one time that an emergency trip to Michaels couldn't be made :-D I decided to take my time to learn and make mistakes anyway.

Could artier sweaters be in my future? I think so! A few more adjustments and it will fit hubs perfectly.

You can follow along on my sweater journey on Twitter!

Ooops, I didn't realize Twitter didn't allow free for all viewing anymore :-D
